DAHLIA FAQ

Orders ship via USPS Priority Mail beginning in April once temperatures are consistently safe for transit. Orders are mailed in the order they are received. You will receive tracking information when your order ships.

We ship via USPS Flat Rate. Estimates below:

• Small Box (1–5 tubers): $14

• Medium Box (6–20 tubers): $25

• Large Box (20+ tubers): $32

Local pickup is available. Online selection will be the most complete. We will have limited availability at the May and June farmers market if inventory remains.

Each tuber is:

• Individually labeled with the variety name

• Bagged with pine shavings for protection and moisture balance

• Packed snugly in a USPS flat-rate box

Open your package immediately.
We recommend:

• Inspect each tuber

• Pot them up as soon as possible if your soil is still cold

• Keep indoors if frost is still expected

• Plant with the neck exposed so you can watch for sprouting

Remember: Tubers will rot if the soil is below 50°F and consistently moist.

Do not water until you see green growth. Excess moisture before sprouting is the #1 cause of rot.

If your dahlia hasn’t sprouted within 3–5 weeks, gently dig it up and contact us with a photo so we can help troubleshoot. We cannot replace losses caused by weather, pests, or growing conditions, but if a tuber fails despite proper care and stock remains available, we may offer a replacement or comparable variety.

Once danger of frost has passed and the soil is warm. Dahlias love heat.

Plant tubers 4–6 inches deep in well-drained soil, laying them horizontally with the eye facing up. Remember: Dahlias thrive in 6+ hours of direct sun per day.

We strongly recommend staking or planning to provide support shortly after planting. Many varieties reach 36–48” tall and benefit from early support.

There is nothing worse than walking into your dahlia patch after its been flattened by a windstorm.

From midsummer until first frost. Pinch at 6–12 inches for fuller plants and more blooms.

We take variety accuracy seriously because we know the anticipation of waiting for that first bloom! As a small farm, our process is very hands-on: every plant is labeled the moment it’s lifted from the field, and we spend the growing season cross-referencing bloom color, size, and form against our farm records.

Because nature (and dahlias!) can sometimes be unpredictable, if a plant’s characteristics seem "off" or questionable, we set it aside for further evaluation rather than risking a mislabeled tuber. We are constantly learning and refining our systems to ensure you can plant with confidence.

Above all, we want you to love what you grow. If you ever receive a tuber that doesn't bloom true-to-name, please reach out. We’ll always try to make it right.

Yes—if you live in a cold climate, dig them up after frost and store them in a cool, humid space. If storage fails (it happens!), come back next spring. We’ll have more tubers ready.

Good news - It’s optional! This is one of the trickier parts to master but its always fun to experiment and learn a new skill. If you’re new to dividing, feel free to:

• Replant the entire clump

• Avoid stressing about finding the “eyes”
