Flowers worth obsessing over

Dahlias at Prairie’s Edge

When we began growing dahlias, we had no idea how quickly they’d capture our hearts. If you’ve ever loved a dahlia lover, you already know how easily admiration becomes obsession. We’re still new to tending these garden phenoms, but every season their shapes, colors, and textures teach us something new. We’re excited to share what we’re learning with our flower-loving community. Join us on this journey as we slowly document, photograph, and celebrate each variety so more people can fall in love with them right alongside us.

DAHLIA FAQ

Always Growing, Always Learning

Some people are afraid to grow these flowers because they have a reputation for being divas, but we disagree. You don’t have to be a Master Gardener to get these babies to bloom in your space. Once they get going, the joy they bring all the way until the first frost is well worth the trouble. It may take a little extra work at the end of the season if you live in a colder climate and want to keep them but that’s a different story.

Native to the highlands of Mexico and Central America, dahlias have been admired for centuries. The Aztecs grew them for food, medicine, and decoration, and today they are celebrated around the world as symbols of resilience, beauty, and inner strength.

Their origins offer clues to their growing needs. Dahlias prefer warm soil, full sun, and steady watering. They thrive in rich, well-drained soil and repay even basic care with abundant blooms from midsummer through frost.

If you’d like to dig deeper into growing, caring for, or simply admiring these flowers, there are many wonderful places to learn more. Below you’ll find our own blog posts along with trusted resources and dahlia societies that welcome new growers.
